About us

We’re Sarah and Aaron, and Shoregate Apartments is very much a hands-on, small family-run business. We both grew up here in Berwick, we feel lucky to call it home, and we love sharing this place with others. We’ve designed the apartments to reflect the character of the area: a little bit historic, a little bit creative, and full of warmth. We’ve poured a lot of care and attention into creating spaces we’d love to stay in ourselves.

Whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re already smitten with this corner of the world, we’re always happy to share recommendations – from quiet beaches and scenic cycle routes to the best coffee, cocktails, or hidden-away bookshops. You’ll find plenty of gems around here, and we’re always delighted to help you make the most of your stay.

We love to travel too, and we often take inspiration from places we’ve stayed ourselves. The Drawing Office’s cool, minimal feel came from a trip to Berlin, while the softer tones in The Weights and Measures Office were inspired by a weekend in Budapest. That said, the things that matter most to us wherever we stay are simple: a great location, a really good shower, and a spotlessly clean apartment. So that’s exactly what we’ve made our top priority here.

Our wonderful sister-in-law helps us with cleaning (she’s as much of a perfectionist as we are!), and we take care of the rest ourselves – painting, decorating, fixing things, even building the website. Aaron is a qualified electrician and an all-round practical problem-solver, and I (Sarah) am a professional photographer with an eye for the details that make a space feel welcoming and thoughtfully put together.

Although we absolutely adore our teenage kids, we know just how valuable a peaceful break can be – so both apartments are designed with adults in mind. Whether you’re here for a romantic weekend, a working trip with a view, or just a few days of breathing space in Berwick, we hope you’ll find the perfect base in Shoregate Apartments.

Our Local Food and Drink Recommendations

One of the best things about staying at Shoregate Apartments is how close you are to some of Berwick’s tastiest spots - no car required! Whether you’re after a laid-back breakfast, a romantic dinner, or just a great coffee or pint, there’s something for every mood just a short stroll away.

For breakfast or lunch, we highly recommend The Lookout Café on the Berwick side of the old bridge, right on the Quayside cobbles. With unbeatable river views and a relaxed vibe, it’s a lovely spot for a proper coffee and a freshly made brunch.

When evening rolls around, you’ll be spoilt for choice on Bridge Street. Mavi serves flavour-packed Turkish favourites in a warm, welcoming setting. The Magna Tandoori is a firm local favourite for Indian food. If you’re in the mood for something a little more refined, head to Audela on Bridge Street for modern British dishes and seasonal ingredients, beautifully done.

Coffee lovers shouldn’t miss a visit to Northern Edge Coffee on Silver Street - home to Berwick’s own artisan roasters - or The Cornerhouse Café on Church Street for a cosy atmosphere and something sweet alongside your brew.

When it comes to a well-earned drink, Berwick’s bars punch well above their weight. The Curfew, hidden down an alley off Bridge Street, is a small but brilliant microbrewery with a great atmosphere. Atelier and Coxon & Coxon Wine Bar are both stylish spots for a glass of wine or a pint of ale, while The Barrels is a good old-fashioned pub with plenty of character.

All of these are within a short walk from the apartments, so you can enjoy the best of Berwick without needing to drive.
